Parkdale Diversity Walk – a celebration of diversity in our neighbourhood.
On Wednesday, November 29, 2017, meeting up at the Parkdale Library, we set out for a casual walk within our community to focus on diversity.
Walking south on Cowan Avenue, we ventured down Milky Way Lane. The original Bell Canada operator station and adjacent warehouse are home to hidden treasures, from designer work studios to the home of HulaPopper, an amazing vintage store that is open “by chance or by appointment” and features wares handpicked by it’s owner.
We continued on and appreciated long-standing and new creative expressions.
Winding over to Queen Street West and Dufferin Street, we stop and admire a newer addition our community; The Parkdale Amphitheater – an open air terraced public space.
Further up Nobel Street, in a quiet secluded area, we stop for a mindfulness session guided by wellness expert, Althea Knight.
We love seeing familiar faces join us on our walks and as always, we are very delighted to have newcomers. A longstanding Parkdale resident saw our flier on the South Parkdalians Facebook Group and decided to join us. We were happy to have her. We walked up Brock Ave, discussed the new condo development slated for the Beer Store site, and then up onto Cunningham Avenue where she gave us all a really detailed history of this area.
We learned that on a single street, diversity was everywhere and that it is the foundation of our beloved Parkdale. And at one time, numerous Toronto Transit Commission staff purchased property in this area and made this area home, together.

Parkdale Walking Group is not your typical walking group. We don’t put our running shoes on and walk briskly down the street. We recognize, live, and promote a healthier lifestyle by simply taking in your environment: be it with nature, the city landscape, a single tree, a flower or a community garden. If you have a story you would like to share, let us know. Everyone is always welcome to join us.
Our last walk of the year, is our Holiday Insights Walk on Wednesday, December 20th, 2017. We will meet at 10:45am at the Parkdale Library. We will finish around 12:00pm.
You can find us on Twitter, Facebook, through our website and by email.
See you soon!
